Easy Knitting
Easy enough to be made as a knitter’s first garment, this Simple Vest has minimal shaping for maximum effect, and with chunky 14ply yarn (or equivalent) and thick needles it’s super quick to knit up. There are also options for Cropped and Regular lengths. The pattern is detailed and includes extra notes and video links to help the novice knitter. Use Peppin 14ply for a clean smooth look, or go for texture and extra coziness with one strand of 10ply held with two strands of fluff. Materials
Yarn –
CROPPED – 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) balls Fiddlesticks Peppin 14ply, OR
one strand of 10ply held with two strands of fluff throughout:
2 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) balls Fiddlesticks Peppin 10ply, or
3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 5) balls Cleckheaton Rodinia 10ply AND
2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) balls Lang Alpaca Superlight, or
3 (3, 4, 4, 5, 5) balls Indiecita Suri Silk
REGULAR – 3 (3, 4, 4, 5, 5) balls Fiddlesticks Peppin 14ply, OR
one strand of 10ply held with two strands of fluff throughout:
3 (4, 4, 5, 6, 6) balls Fiddlesticks Peppin 10ply, or
3 (4, 4, 5, 6, 7) balls Cleckheaton Rodinia 10ply AND
3 (3, 4, 4, 5, 5) balls Lang Alpaca Superlight, or
3 (4, 5, 5, 6, 7) balls Indiecita Suri Silk

Needles – 5.5mm and 6.5mm needles
Extras – 2 stitch-holders, a tape measure, and wool needle for sewing seams and ends

Tension
13sts and 19 rows to 10cm over Stocking Stitch. Check your tension for an accurate fit. Stitch tension is much more important than row tension in this garment.

Update May 2026: The pattern has had a facelift, including QR codes and links to demonstration videos for mattress stitch and knitting up stitches. Due to feedback, both the cropped and regular garment lengths have been made slightly longer, so the yarn quantities have been recalculated and updated to reflect current yarns in store.
